About the trust
Local charitable funding, carefully awarded.
The Hemby Trust is a charitable trust established in 1998 specifically to give cash grants to charitable organisations in Merseyside and Wirral.
It was endowed through the generosity of one family who had lived in the area for many years. The Trustees look for practical projects with clear local benefit and good use of funds.
Up to £5,000
Most awards are between £500 and £3,000.

1 February, 1 June and 1 October by 12 noon.

Projects must benefit residents in Merseyside and Wirral.
Priorities
Where the Trust aims to help.
The objective of the Trust is particularly to provide help in the following areas. Priority is given to projects benefitting the greatest number of residents in Merseyside and Wirral.
The Arts
Community access to arts, culture and creative opportunities.
Social Needs
Practical support for people and communities facing disadvantage.
Youth & Employment
Projects that develop young people, skills and employability.
The Environment
Local environmental work that benefits communities and shared places.
Self-help matters
The Trustees like to see evidence of self-help, such as fundraising by the charity. A grant may be offered on condition that the charity also raises a matching amount through its own efforts, not from other trusts or statutory bodies.
How to apply
Send a complete application before the relevant deadline.
A completed application form is always required. If the form gives too little space for the project to be described adequately, up to two additional A4 sheets can be accepted.
Completed applications are not acknowledged, but applicants are welcome to email or telephone the Administrator to check that they have arrived safely.
If in any doubt about the best way to complete the application form, including the size of the grant to be requested, applicants are strongly advised to telephone the Administrator, who will be glad to advise.
Include with your application
- A breakdown of the budget for the project.
- A copy of the latest annual accounts.
- A copy of the most recent bank statement for the charity account into which an award should be paid if successful.
- Single-sided, unstapled application pages.

Deadlines are no later than 12 noon on that date. If the 1st of the month falls on a weekend or Bank Holiday, the deadline is the last working day before.
What is not funded
- Applicants from outside Merseyside and Wirral.
- Individuals, sponsorship, political organisations or pressure groups.
- Religious bodies or places of worship, unless there is significant community use.
- Where funding from statutory bodies is, or should be, available.
- Schools seeking specialist status.
- Return applicants less than two years after a successful application.
- Any form of memorial.

Both forms are available as PDF, Word documents, and printable image pages. Successful applicants must return an Evaluation Form within six months; failure to do so will bar future applications.
Grant procedure
Three meetings are normally held each year.
Grants are normally decided in March, July and November, although these dates may vary from time to time. Applicants are advised of the result of their application within 10 working days of the meeting.
In allocating grants, the Trustees consider carefully the effect on the locality and the number of local people who will benefit. They are always anxious to ensure that grants are used to good effect.
All awards are paid by BACS transfer. Successful applicants must acknowledge receipt of payment in writing.

Over £2.9m offered to local charitable causes.
Since the Trust started to make donations in 1998, a total in excess of £2,924,648 has been offered to over 1,769 charitable causes based in Merseyside and Wirral.
2025/26 £107,884 to 53 organisations
Recipients received donations of between £500 and £6,556. Not all grants awarded were paid during the year but were carried forward pending matched funds and performance reviews.

- When you ask us to provide a grant to you and subsequently provide us with the necessary information.
- From third parties, for example, when we carry out our routine checks on you before we consider your application for funding.
- Where you provide us with personal data relating to others, we understand that you either have their consent or are entitled to provide this information to us for subsequent use.
How we use your personal data?
- We process your personal data in order to fulfil our obligation to you in considering your application properly. Processing includes, but is not limited to, obtaining, recording and holding information or data about you.
- It may be necessary for us or a third party to process your personal data as part of legitimate interests.
- We do not circulate marketing information.
Our legitimate interests include audit, planning and transactional reporting. Such activities are all in compliance with legal, regulatory and other governance requirements and we will keep such personal data for as long as it remains necessary for those activities or requirements.

As well as making your information available for the aforementioned purposes, it will be shared with third parties providing relevant services to us.
